Draft Horses will be at the Fairgrounds Soon
If you have never seen a draft horse in person, be sure to put the Draft Horse Classic on your calendar. These gentle giants will become your new best friends. We have been long enchanted by the draft horses and the families that care for them. They are truly magnificent. And the shows that let them strut their stuff are great fun. The Nevada County Fairgrounds works hard to host the Draft Horse Classic every September.
We photograph a lot of animals. We are mindful of how animals feel about the camera. Some animals find a camera slightly unnerving and become skittish or sky when we point the lens in their direction. Horses are no different. We always meet animals before holding up the camera. We talk to them and let them smell our hand. And if they don't like the camera, we don't force a moment. We expect animals to be camera-shy (especially when we first approach them). Except, last year, the draft horses remembered us :). I mean, maybe they didn't really remember, but they sure liked getting camera attention. And during the show, many of them looked right at our media area as if asking how do I look? Are you catching this pose? And this one? I look good, don't I?
Why, yes, yes you do.
The shows have many categories that feature different types of hitches and wagons. From the single hitch up to the six horse team. Between the shows, visitors can tour the barns and meet the horses themselves.
