In another timeline, we would be at the Nevada County Fair this weekend. We would be eating snacks on Treat Street, visiting the barns, wandering the midway... Aw, we miss it all, especially the people and community that came together every year (except this year). I do think we'll all savor future events for the rest of our lives. Once we accept being in large groups of people again, of course. Junior Livestock and Ag Mechanics are holding an online auction to support the hard working Junior Livestock and Ag Mechanics participants. Click here to visit the Nevada County Fair website for more information about the auction. What do you miss most about the fair? Myself, I miss colorful lights against the cool evening sky.
When we photograph events, we pay attention to the scene. These images showcase moments from a distance, with layers of action and/or interest. We pay close attention to light in these compositions. We often scope out great views during the day, then hurry back when the sun is in just the right location to add even more atmosphere to the image. We timed our ride on the giant ferris wheel deliberately to capture sun through the trees over the midway. Our kids are accustomed to these strategies. And photographing the fair multiple years, I know exactly how the sun hits different parts of the grounds. And the midway has enough ambient dust to really catch those sunbeams :)
We then pay attention to moments, which usually happens with people (though not always). We are always alert to interactions or opportunities to document the experience of an event. We are mindful of being respectful of families and children (with young children, whenever possible, we ask parents permission before sharing with event organizers). We also take a lot of photos in public performances or places where people expect to be photographed. And when we capture a lovely moment, such as the family with marigolds, we email the digital file to them.
The last important agenda item for us at events is documenting details. From a goat to marigolds, the details come together to create an unforgettable experience.
Last year we got to attend arena events for the first time. And we were looking forward to revisiting with experience to know the best places to stand out of the way and capture the action. The fast-moving area events with roaring monster trucks and high flying motocross are a favorite with visitors. We love photographing action-packed moments.
Future years will always have this year where we could remember favorite fair memories without creating new memories. We miss Treat Street, the barns, the exhibits, and, most importantly, the people. We'll see you all again soon!
