Adventures with Cosplay and Video Games and Katara

Being in lockdown makes us miss events that inspired us even more. One of our favorite adventures is when Wizard World comes to town. The mix of vendors, cosplay, and panels creates epic moments. This year, we had another client event on the same weekend, so we joined the gathering on Sunday. It was quite a bit quieter than the Saturday crowds. And that was fine by us. We chatted with wonderful folks about what excites them in the world- from custom D&D dice to elaborate cosplay to intricate pumpkin carving. Many fascinating stories!

A new feature was the gaming lounge where we could try different games and take breaks which is always appreciated.

Anika was Katara from Avatar: The Last Airbender. Her cosplay was super popular. She molded the necklace with sculpy, then painted the impression. Our favorite innovation was the "gloves" which we made from a pair of socks and a stretchy shirt we bought at the thrift store. We cut the toes off the socks and added a hole for her thumb. We cut the stretchy shirt into strips to wrap around her wrists. The effect looked perfect! And it was an affordable alternative to fancy fingerless gloves. We found the dress on Amazon, then customized it by snipping the side seams and adding white fabric along the hem and neckline. Of course things gave us some fiddly-figuring-out, but we were pleased with how it turned out. In case you're interested in your own Katara cosplay, click here for the original dress. It took us awhile to find it and we're happy to help others track it down easier. We added white bias tape for the edges. And a simple wide white piece of elastic with hook and loop closure for the belt. Of course I forget to write down the measurements as we're creating things. Truth is, we often eyeball in the sewing department to see what looks right more than what measures correctly :)

The event was another fun chapter in our visits with Wizard World through the years. Right now, events are on hold for Covid, but Wizard World hosts online chats with actors and creatives if you're interested. We look forward to seeing all of you again soon!
